Samsung Electronics said Monday it had successfully tested the technology without high-speed wireless fifth generation (5G) that would allow users to download an entire movie in one second.

The South Korean giant said the test involved the transmission of data over a gigabyte per second over a distance of two kilometers.

The new technology, which will not be ready before 2020, will offer transmission speeds "up to hundreds of times faster" than existing 4G networks.

Samsung officials said that this will allow users to transmit massive data files including digital high quality movies virtually without restriction.

Thus, subscribers can enjoy a wide range of services such as 3D movies and games, streaming real-time ultra high-definition content (UHD), and remote medical services.

South Korea is one of the most connected countries in the world, already has about 20 million users of 4G technology.
